Magazine Cover Redesign // InDesign
The purpose of this assignment is to redesign an existing magazine. You will be redesigning the front cover and nameplate, table of contents, and an article section that is at least 5 pages long.
Find a magazine you would be interested in redesigning and bring it to the next class. You will need to photocopy the front cover, table of contents and an article from the magazine. Next label nameplate, table of content, masthead, article headline, body text, and photo caption. You can use a marker, pen, or pencil to label it. (20 points)
Think about the current audience of the magazine and how your redesign might affect them. How will your redesign affect or influence them? What will keep them loyal customers?
Now for the redesign consider possible typefaces, the location and size of the page numbers/folio and running heads, kerning and leading of the text, etc. Explore legibility and spend time researching it—experiment with grids, sans serif or serif type, leading, length of line, and width of margins. Bear in mind the guidelines for legibility.
You may create your magazine title in Illustrator but the layout is to be completed in InDesign. A packaged folder that is zipped must be uploaded to Blackboard.
Create a rough sketch of your new design idea and once happy with the sketch begin to construct it in InDesign. Use appropriate fonts, colors, effects, and images. Use the same text for the article but change the layout and pictures. Once you have completed the whole redesign print and mount.
Remember you need: front cover, table of contents, and an article section that is at least 5 pages long. Submit the printed project redesign, the sketches you created, your .zip folder to blackboard and the labelled photocopies for grading.
