2017 - Introductory Assignments - Getting to Know You!
Don't panic... this will take us most if not all of the first week.
Part 1: Student Info Form (Do after your collage is finished)
- Complete and submit the "Student Information Form". Can be found in the "Getting Started" menu or by clicking here.
- Remember to have a gmail account and a Weebly account created before you fill out the Student Information Form.
If you have problems with creating either your email account or your Weebly account / site, please see Brendan or wait until Ms. McKay returns

Part 3: Creating Your Name Identity
- The task is to create several versions of your name in a couple of different online apps or generators.
- How many is "several" you ask?
That is really hard to say. It is not about quantity. It is about quality and creativity.
So my suggestion, do enough to show me that you actually made an effort, as opposed to rushing and not trying things out.
I would rather have 5-8 really great and totally unique versions of your name created in a couple of the apps instead of 15 unreadable and sloppy designs created in only one of the applications. - Be adventurous and explore the applications and the various options for colours / fonts / styles / etc.
- When you are happy with a design, save or download it into the "Getting Started" folder you created earlier. Be sure to keep track of which application was used to create each version of your name.
There are many online name and logo generators, but here are a few of my favourites to try:
Part 4: Creating Logos
- The task is to create several versions of a logo in a couple of different online apps or generators.
- You will need at least two different types of logos and three examples of each type.
- Personal Logo (Your name with icons or graphics that say something about you). You may even have a phrase that captures the essence of who you are as a person or what your goals are
- Company Logo - You will need to come up with a name for a fictional graphic design or publishing company that you are "working" for
- Personal Logo (Your name with icons or graphics that say something about you). You may even have a phrase that captures the essence of who you are as a person or what your goals are
- As we said previously, it is not about quantity. It is about quality, creativity, effort, and uniqueness.
- When you are happy with a design, save or download it into the "Getting Started" folder you created earlier. Be sure to keep track of which application was used to create each version of your name.
- As many of these applications or generators are wanting to have customers purchase designs from them, downloading or saving a design may not be an option. Instead you might have use a screen capture program or shortcuts to take pictures of your completed logos (don't worry about grid marks)
- PC - "Snipping Tool" or Print Screen / Paint
- Mac - "Grab" or keyboard shortcut (Command + Shift + F4, and then drag over area to be captured)
- Here are some apps / generators I found online. If you don't like these ones, then try some others that you find. Just be sure to keep track of them so we can share the sites with your classmates.
Part 5: Online Photo Editing
Time for some photo editing fun:
- Use several of the applications to create unique examples of photo editing and manipulation. Save or download each of your creations. If necessary, take a screen shot using command+shift+4 or the Grab application tool.
- In creating your examples, you might want to use a couple of images that you use repeatedly. For example, in the end I might have 40 versions of the same flowers and 20 versions of the same romantic couple. But each version is very different from the rest. This can be more effective than using 60 different images to start with.
- You will be marked on the creativity and the effort you put into your examples and the variety of techniques used throughout your work. In other words, don't create 3 photos using the same filter or tool.
- Here are some of the tools to consider using. There are lots more out there.

Part 6: Weebly Component
- With this assignment, you will be creating a website using the weebly.com website developer tool
- The focus is not only on creating specific content, but also on figuring out how to use weebly.com.
- Within your site, you should create the following pages:
- An Introductory Splash page introducing yourself
- A photo of yourself taken in photobooth and uploaded.
- Inspirational Quote that you find inspiring
- Try not to include personal information such as last name, school, address, phone number, etc.
- 2 specific content pages that tell me something about who you are: interests, values, experiences, etc. Examples might include things such as favourite movies, favourite cartoon characters, best friends, places where you have lived, dreamed cars, a list of facts about you that your classmates might find interesting. The list of possibilities is endless.
- Whatever the topic you choose, you need to include at least 3 examples. For instance, if you choose movies, you might include a discussion of Bambi, Star Wars, and Fright Night. For each movie, you might include a title, a plot synopsis, why you enjoy it, and a a movie trailer.
- Be sure to cite your sources properly. (Photos, videos, graphics, borrowed text, etc.)
- Things to remember
- Try to use a non-linear design
- Be careful of your spelling and grammar
Future Plans:
- You will be using an online tool or desktop app to create a digital product that reflects who you are. Most likely, https://www.befunky.com/
- This time, be sure to select the "Designer" tab
