Overview of Steps: (From https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/image-trace.html)
- Open or place a raster image in your Illustrator document.
- With the placed image selected, do one of the following:
- Choose Object > Image Trace > Make to trace with default parameters. Illustrator converts the image to black and white tracing result by default.
- Click the Image Trace button in the Control panel or the Properties panel, or select a preset from the Tracing Presets button.
- Choose Window > Image Trace or switch to the Tracing workspace to open the Image Trace panel, and do one of the following:
- Choose one of the default presets by clicking the icons on top of the panel. For details, see Specify tracing options | Preset.
- Choose a preset from the Preset drop-down menu.
- Specify the tracing options. For details, see Specify tracing options.
- Note:
- In the Image Trace panel, enable Preview to see the results of your modifications.
- The resolution of your placed image determines the speed of the tracing.
- (Optional) Adjust the results of the tracing in the Image Trace panel (Window > Image Trace).
- To convert the tracing object to paths and to manually editing the vector artwork, choose Object > Image Trace > Expand.
What you should have learned:
- Note, the process could have been done in two different documents rather than two art boards in the same document.
- We are reminded of the differences between raster and vector images
- In an existing document, add raster images to your Illustrator projects by choosing File > Place.
- Select an image with the Selection tool (black arrow).
- Click Image Trace in the Properties panel to the right of the document and choose a trace preset to set trace options. At this point you can view different presets or even refine them with "advanced" options
- Click Expand in the Properties panel to commit to the tracing and convert to editable vector artwork. Remember at this point you can no longer try other trace settings.
- Click and hold the Direct Selection tool (the white arrow), and select the Lasso tool in the Tools panel. Drag around the traced artwork to select it. If you select too much, hold the option key and drag around to unselect areas.
- After you choose Edit > Copy, choose Edit > Paste to paste the artwork.
- Click the Group button near the bottom of the Properties panel to group the artwork, treating it as a single object.
- Resize or transform the artwork. Remember to hold the shift key to constrain the proportions and not cause awkward stretching effects.
- Click the colour fill in the Properties panel to the right of the document to change its colour.
- You could also use your pathfinder and shape builder tools to simply objects further
